The Sleep Apnea Machine And What Is It's Purpose

From the moment you were born your mother worried that while you slept you might stop breathing. When you were a baby you might have stopped breathing for a couple of seconds, then you gasped for air and were able to catch your breath. This is not an uncommon experience, but one that is very frightening for new parents.

If this type of breathing disorder keeps reoccurring than that can be even scarier.

With older people sleep apnea is a more common occurrence than with small babies and children. For some reason or another, the body will stop breathing and it will skip taking a few breaths before starting to breath again. One of the more commonly known reasons for this type of disorder to happen is when the body becomes to relaxed the muscles in the throat and mouth become to weak to keep supporting all the tissue. The tissues would then collapse and cause an obstruction in the airway and the person would stop breathing for a short time. If this should happen more than five times in a minute this would be obstructive sleep apnea.

A solution to sleep apnea is to make sure that there is not a collapse in tissue to cause an obstruction so that the body continues to breathe. Surgery can be used to adjust and tighten structures in the mouth and throat area, but another method that can be used at night is called a sleep apnea machine. The sleep apnea machine works by using a flow of air pressure to open up the airway so it does not get blocked. The sleep apnea CPAP machine which stands for "continuous positive airway pressure machine", will do just that. By providing constant flows of air pressure during inhalation this machine help’s keep the airways open. For solving nighttime breathing disorders the sleep apnea CPAP is a very effective method to use.

It might take awhile to get used to being connected to a machine and wearing a mask while you sleep, but once you do it will help you get a good nights sleep. For people with a more severe type of sleep apnea there is another sleep apnea machine that can be used. This machine is known as a BiPAP and what makes it different from the CPAP machine is that it works during inhalation and exhalation.

If a sleep apnea machine is needed for you to breathe properly while you sleep than you need to consult your physician for guidance. Your doctor will be able to give you all the information about suppliers of the machine and how to use it and also help you so that you get a mask that fits right so to make it as comfortable as possible while you sleep.
